How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credit hours attempted. Each letter grade has a numeric value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). For weighted courses (AP, honors, IB), an extra 0.5-1.0 points is added to reflect course difficulty.
GPA = Σ(Grade Value × Credits) / Σ(Credits)
Frequently Asked Questions
Unweighted GPA treats all courses equally on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds extra points (typically 0.5-1.0) for advanced courses like AP, honors, and IB, allowing a maximum above 4.0. Colleges often recalculate both to evaluate your academic rigor.
Selective colleges typically look for 3.5-4.0 unweighted. Less selective schools may accept 2.5-3.0. However, colleges consider course rigor, extracurriculars, essays, and test scores alongside GPA. A slightly lower GPA with challenging courses can be stronger than a perfect GPA with easy classes.
Yes! Your cumulative GPA is the average of all semesters combined. Add all courses from all semesters into this calculator to get your cumulative result. The weighted option supports AP/IB courses that often appear on high school transcripts.
